(I had planned on making this thread like a month ago but never got around to it)

A little while back the Milwaukee Public School System allowed students to obtain condoms through the school nurse. It was done in an attempt to lower teen pregnancy. Good idea or bad idea?

Here's what I think:
Bad idea. Why? Because it makes sex an 'ok' thing to do. Some families have certain beliefs/ways of life that they want their kids to follow. A place as influential as school has (essentially) given sex a stamp of approval. The topic of whether or not sex is ok is a very touchy issue. I don't think schools should have the ability to say whether or not its right.

The school boards seem to have given in. They simply replace education with a condom. What will that solve? While it may indeed lower teen pregnancy, they turn a blind eye toward other consequences.

Question: are we talking high schools only or middle as well? High school, actually I rephrase that. I think it's ok across the board.

Why? because kids are going to do it no matter what, regardless what the sex ed class says will happen at prom, or if mommy or daddy tell them they will get send off to an all boys/girls school. Once people/humans get around the age of 13 they will do what they want what they want regardless of what they are "warned" could or will happen.

Does condoms in school make having sex much more convient? totally but here is the question. would you rather your teen get pg because she was to scared to buy condoms at the local gas station? or because little timmy didn't have the money to buy some knowing he was going to loose his virginity that night but had the mind set of "it wont happen" to me and goes along with it, to become a daddy at 15?

think about it...

I lost my virginity at 15 (26 now) and thankfully I was able to find some at my friends dads house when dad was at work. I didn't become a dad and regardless of having that condom that night I probably woulda did the deed either way.

Yes I meant high schools.

because kids are going to do it no matter what
So I suppose you also think we should abolish the drinking age because people will "do it no matter what." Hell, we might as well legalize drinking and driving.

Who says my teen is guaranteed to have sex during High School? Do not make the mistake that every teen will have sex.
Besides that, I agree with you. You are right. However, that doesn't make everything all fine and dandy as some people might believe. When kids start thinking "Ooo we must be allowed to have sex now." they are now more likely to partake in other risky behavior.

Comparing underage drinking to sex (which is legal at the age of 16 by the way) doesn't make much sense at all.

and what do you mean "your teen?" you are 17 fella. I also know for a fact that not everyone student that goes through high school will have sex nor will they are drink at a party by time they get to their graduation but I assure you 8 out of 10 will. (drink and have sex)

To not believe this or think it is totally false is understandable as you are looking at it as a person in the current age group/situation who has yet to been along for the entire ride yet..

no offense, seriously.

All I was saying is that your excuse of "they will do it anyway" is a poor one. Rules/laws that are in place for the safety of the public are broken all the time. Does that mean we should get rid of them?

As to "my teen," I was simply playing along with your examples.
And your right, I haven't experienced the whole ride. But that does not make me ignorant. Besides, I really don't see how my age is relevant here. Wouldnt you think my age would put me at the other end of the debate?

Here is the bigger question: If it's not illegal (sex) why not help protect people?

Because they already have that protection! You can get condoms all over the place. But when they are being given out for free in schools it sends the wrong message.

So now you are saying if you can't afford to protect yourself nobody should be allowed to get help? (unless you are referring to clinics) If you are referring to clinics however that make a bit of sense but what is wrong with a school doing it? what makes it so bad?

Some of the most...sexual dancing I ever have seen in my entire life was at high school dances...if that's okay...

Oh no. By having them at school, it DOES help lower pregnancy in its own way. But it also increases how many teens will have sex, which may lead to pregnancy if the condom doesnt work properly.

I'm in high school, and I have no problem at all going to the store and buying condoms. But would I rather get them at the convinience of my school? For what may be FREE? (No price was mentioned so I'm just assuming free). Of course I would! And even if they weren't free, its still more secretive and less "embarrassing" to teens than buying them at the store.

A lot of kids dont have sex (for the first time anyways) simply because they DO want to be safe, but are too afraid to go to the store and buy a condom. If the condoms are placed in the school, a lot of the kids who were too afraid to buy them at the store would jump all over that. Like fe3rMe said, the school gives them the idea that sex is ok. (Not that theres a real problem with it), but if they are trying to lower teen pregnancies, they shouldnt give students the idea that they can have sex whenever they want.

And as for the already sexually active teens, having condoms at school, which you go to five days a week I might add... is just going to allow them to have sex more often! I'm not saying they WILL, but chances are, if they are already sexually active (meaning they dont have a problem with buying condoms at the store or asking parents or whatever) then it just makes it easier for them to get condoms and have more, potentially dangerous, sex.

It also sends a bad message to the middle school kids. I remember when I was in middle school 8th grade year, one year until high school! I wanted to learn everything there was to know about highschool! And a lot of other kids are like that as well. I think we have all had friends that were in high school while we were in middle school. And the point of that is that you ask your friends about the school. How it works, what goes on and all of that stuff.

Now, like NoTTaShoT said kids start thinking about sex at an early age. 13. Which is 8th grade for most kids. If those kids have friends in high school, they will probably ask how it is and all that? And if they werent already excited enough, the friends could very well tell them about the condoms at school and how "You dont have to go to the store, they have them here! It's SO easy!". And just like that the kids at Middle School begin to think about sex more and more, which leads to pregnancy in some cases.

So although it has a good purpose, having condoms at school is not a good idea. It can do a lot more bad than good. Thats what I think DPFN, Stay smart out there all of you unsafe high schoolers ;)

You really think neither a high school boy nor girl can afford to buy condoms? Its like 8 bucks for a pack of 12.
I'll admit, I've had sex and used a condom. Its not hard to buy them at a store... But when you bring that to a High School environment it fucks everything up.

As for how its bad, I'll copy and paste/edit what I said before:
Because it makes sex an 'ok' thing to do. Some families have certain beliefs/ways of life, and school boards have no business interfering with that. A place as influential as school has (essentially) given sex a stamp of approval. The topic of whether or not sex is ok is a very touchy issue. I don't think schools should have the ability to say whether or not its right.

I'm not going to lie when I say you have some good points I just can understand why its being done even if there are some possible big side affects chain reactions to it. I just believe when it comes down to the wire is to protect and not to handicap.

Yes, I can understand their reasoning behind it, also. But it seems that the negative will eventually outweigh the positive.

If they don't have problems buying condoms at the store, why would they be having more sex because of free condoms? I don't see it increasing the amount of sex of sexually active teens. You can already get free condoms at health clinics.
